Area Agency on Aging

   The Council is the designated Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in accordance with the Older Americans Act. The Area Agency on Aging plans, administers and advocates for the development of a comprehensive service delivery system to meet short and long-term needs of the elderly in this region.
   The Agency is responsible for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, that ensures the rights of residents in nursing and adult care homes, through coordination with county based committees. The Area Agency on Aging is assisted by the Senior Tar Heel Legislature/Advisory Committee on Aging (STHL/ACA) which has representatives from the seven counties. The AAA also provides the Family Caregiver Support Program and the Medicare Outlook Program. The mission of the AAA is to preserve and strengthen the quality of life for older citizens through cooperative efforts with elected officials, non-profit agencies, private enterprise, and other resources..

The AAA also provides technical assistance involving training, grant preparation, community coordination efforts, needs assessments and resource inventories. The AAA assists with the development of multi-purpose senior centers, and works to strengthen home and community care for older adults.
As part of the Regional Council of Governments, the AAA works closely with local governments. Planning and administrative activities are coordinated with other programs including emergency medical services, economic development, employment and training, and housing.
